5 Reasons you should study STEM

2016 inaugural STEM Girl Power Attendees

The World Science Festival was held in Brisbane on the 9th  to 13th March.  It was a very exciting time due to the fact it was the first time ever that it was held outside of New York!  The focus of the festival was Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM).

The World Science Festival coincided with International Women’s Week which provided a great opportunity to spotlight the issue of fewer women working in the Science Industry.

The Department of Education run a competition to promote the study of STEM subjects for female students.  It was called STEM Girl Power and the successful applicants attended a camp in Brisbane to attend the festival, meet mentors and participate in a range of activities.  111 female Year 10 students applied and only 22 were selected to attend and I was one of the fortunate ones!
Here are five great reasons why you should take your STEM subjects seriously:
It’s  FUN – you get to participate in different types of experiments, trials and challenges.
It’s Interesting – you learn fascinating stuff that you will use in the rest of your life.
• Be the first – you could make new discoveries or invent exciting things.
• Imagine the possibilities – there are so many career paths you could take
• It sparks your creativity -  imagine what you could do?……………………
The STEM Girl Power Camp was an amazing opportunity and I am happy to be a STEM ambassador to help encourage girls into the exciting world of Math and Science.
