What
are School-based Apprenticeships and Traineeships?
School-based
Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SATs) allow senior phase of learning
students to engage in work while studying for their Queensland Certificate of Education.
(This includes students who wish to study for tertiary entrance). It is
hoped that many students in the Senior Phase of Learning will take up SATs
during their enrolment at the College.
As part of the
apprenticeship or traineeship, students undertake an accredited training
qualification with a training provider chosen by the employer and the
student.
Traineeships are found
by the student. Usually a traineeship will be offered by an employer if
the student shows interest and skills at either Structured Work Experience or a
part time job. The college Transition Officer will help organize the
required paperwork and work with the student, parents, employer, RTO (Training
provider) and the AAC ( Australian Apprenticeship Company).
Trainees are required to
complete 50 days within a 12 month period to meet the “on the job”
component of the training. This means students usually take one day out of
school a week to participate in practical experience at their work place
Student workload for the
traineeship is the responsibility of the trainee. To support the trainee
at school, the students are given the opportunity to drop one of their
subjects. This is negotiated by the Student, Teachers, Deputy Principal
and Head of Department. Students who drop a subject attend the Learning
Centre in that time and work on their workbooks/
online course provided by their Training Organisation(RTO).
